Restless Legs Syndrome: Symptoms and Solutions

One question I am frequently asked is, what exactly is restless legs syndrome? RLS is a medical condition without a clear cause known. It’s described as an uncomfortable and uncontrolled sensation in the legs that interrupts rest and sleep, and it's more common than you think. But what's less commonly known is what can be done to treat it. Fortunately, we have answers.

Key Features of Restless Legs Syndrome

Having Restless Legs Syndrome, or RLS, comes with many symptoms and sensations. However, the key feature of RLS's trademark "jumpy legs" is that it typically only occurs in the evenings and at night when people want to rest. The other key distinguishing factor is that the only way to get relief is to either lay down flat or stand and walk around. In the clinic, I see patients every day who suffer from RLS and are desperately searching for solutions.

It's important to note that 80% of the people who have RLS and a vein condition see marked improvement with their RLS after treatment. Patients tell us they are able to sleep through the night again and can sit through evening activities and actually enjoy them...many for the first time in years.

Struggling to sleep because of restless leg syndrome

The first step is to schedule a vein screening either in-person or virtually with us so we can find out what's causing your symptoms. In that screening, we'll ask you a series of very specific questions about your symptoms. Your answers will tell us whether or not a vein condition is most likely at play. If so, the next step is to schedule a specialized vein ultrasound where we look more closely at your veins and watch for the presence of vein reflux. Depending on what we see with that ultrasound, we'll be able to recommend your unique plan for treatment.
