My Legs Hurt! Am I Just Getting Older?

No matter our age, inside all of us lives an image of ourselves as a healthy, active and attractive 19-year-old. Often what we see happening to our body does not make us happy. Especially when aging becomes more than just grey hair, wrinkles, and an expanding waistline. What happens when you can no longer participate in your favorite activities because of leg pain and swelling? It seems you can’t avoid the telltale signs of aging...or can you? Getting older isn’t optional but, as we’ll show you, leg pain is.

The one thing worse than having pain is the hopeless feeling with which you have to learn to live. And physical pain, with no known relief, causes mental and emotional pain. It’s exhausting to constantly want to get better, only to feel consistently betrayed by the body you’re trying to help. Physical activity becomes impossible because of the chronic symptoms of vein conditions. Patients tell us they feel run down, have lost hope, and believe that life is passing them by.

In 2019, the Journal of Aging Research published a study linking physical activity in aging adults to an increased life span of nearly 7 years. For adults that also had other health risk factors, physical activity benefitted them as well, showing an increased life expectancy for them of up to 4 years. As we age, staying fit and active becomes vital to enjoy the life we want to live. Pain may threaten to stop you, but pain that is the result of a vein condition is highly treatable.  And treatment can have you back up and running, literally, in no time.

You don't have to put up with leg pain and you don't have to suffer in silence. Review our checklist to see if any of your symptoms are connected to an underlying vein condition. If you believe so, or still aren’t sure but want to be, contact us for a free 20-minute vein screening

You don't need to act your age and your age shouldn't define your life. Create the life you want and enjoy it to the fullest. Follow the example of Ernestine Shepherd. At 83 years of age, Ernestine is an active and vibrant bodybuilder and personal trainer. She is a role model and a mentor for many. Resolve to take action and give yourself every advantage in enjoying your life journey. We suggest the following steps:

  1. Eat healthy – Avoid inflammation-causing foods like fatty foods and sweets. Reduce your caffeine intake. Eat smaller portions and prepare meals in advance so you don't have to cook every day.
  2. Exercise and stay as active as possible. Go for walks. Take an aquatics class or just go swimming. Being active doesn't mean you have to go to the gym!
  3. Be positive – Choose to find things that make you happy and enjoy life!
  4. Challenge yourself and your mind – Read a book, take an art or academic class, join a club.
  5. Stay connected with your community and family – Volunteer at local charities and visit friends and family.

The key to aging gracefully is to focus on what you can control...and that’s more than what you may first realize. Don't let the symptoms of a vein problem get the better of you! You don't have to put up with constant pain and self-esteem doesn’t have to diminish with age. Take control and let your golden years shine!
